 Ben and Emma Thatcher, Partners

Ben Thatcher

When I was younger I used to love working in my Grandad's shed cutting wood and being shown how to use the tools.  I never knew at the time I was obviously supposed to grow up to be a builder!

At age 16 I started a Capentry apprenticeship with Affordable Lofts (then run by the previous owener Michael Mildenhall) and studying at Reading College of Art & Design. In 2008, with retirement calling, Mick offered me the opportunity to take over owenership of Affordable Lofts.

I now run Affordable Lofts with my wife and business partner, Emma, with Emma at my side we are able to push the company to the next level.  With a more competitive market since the recession and a more demanding market since programs like Grand Designs came about, we work hard to ensure that our customer service and the quality of our craftmanship is as good as it can be, but whilst always trying to keep the prices as affordable as possible for our clients.

My favourite part of the job is at the end when the client tells me they are extremely happy! I love working on the tools, always improving my skills and sometimes finding discovering new methods.  I always like to see how fast the job comes together; for a straightforward Loft Conversion, from ariving on the job on Day 1 and then reaching the first structural inspection (once all the structural work is complete), this takes on average 3 weeks! Our clients are always happily suprised when they see it moving on so quickly!

My least favourite part of the job is ripping out old style insultion! It's so itchy when it gets down your back!.........and it always gets down your back! The paperwork is never a fun side either, this is where Emma comes in!

I love running my own business and working as a builder, it's great at the end of the job seeing it all come together, but it can mean long days and working weekends- Emma's always telling me I need a holiday!

Emma Thatcher

Working as a manager within a forensic submission department for a number of years, I gained a wealth of experience in organisation which is paramount to be able to make any business work!  Like every job the amount of paperwork and spreadsheets that comes with it is huge!

Alongside looking after our 2 young children, my role within Affordable Lofts is to free up Ben as much as possible to complete the building side of the process!  He is in control of the building work, inspections, ordering and receiving materials, quoting for new work and I complete everything else, I am the administrator, book keeper, payroll,  marketing lady and secretary!

We work as a team on all jobs and by keeping on top of things we find we are still able to find that precious time to play with our children!

Jordan Evans

Joining our team in February 2016, Jordan completed an apprenticeship with us and is now a qualified carpenter. Jordan is always eager to learn new skills and is constantly thriving to improve his existing skills. He is always happy to talk to clients and discuss what stage we are in their project. Jordan is a great addition to our team.
